This song means a lot to me. It's ultimately about a certain type of person; the wallflower. It describes the kind of person who stands at the side simply watching the world move by him. He is frozen by his fear of rejection and does not know how to relax around lots of people. They may like the music, but they cannot cut loose, they are afraid of what you'll say. I'm a very shy person, I worry that people will make fun of me and think less of me when I talk or try and dance. It's better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. That's what this song means to me.
Of course, some smaller bands have trouble getting people dancing at their shows, so that's also the target of this song, to point out the people who don't want to dance to try and get the crowd more into it. That also fits with the heavier beat this song is backed up by.
But this is basically a complaint about the arrogant wallflower, and a recognition of the afraid wallflower. And I appreciate it because I am very afraid of people sometimes, and this makes me not feel so alone; knowing that there are others out there as scared as I am.
